Last Friday A Tribe Called Quest made a huge comeback with the reissue of 'People's Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm'. Of all the cool things Pitchfork had to say about the album the statement I most agree with is that this is the best reissue to come out in the past couple of years. On the reissued LP there are some goodies like the J. Cole remix of Can I Kick It?
- No, J. Cole didn't rap over the original track. (No one can live up to the original verses.) The rapper/producer flipped the original instrumental into a jazzy rendition of the hit. The funk is still there but in a completely new way. The only thing I have against the remix is the length. At only 2:51 the remix will leave you pining for more.
- J. Cole was the right choice for this remix. His vision complements the album in a way that is organic and natural. Hypothetically, if you gave someone, who hasn't heard of A Tribe Called Quest, the original release with this remix in the place of the original (It's blasphemy, but hear me out.) I guarantee the person would not realize that this remix was made in 2015.
- 'People's Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm' is an iconic album that continues to inspire rappers and producers today. If this album were never conceived many sounds and lyrics would not have been possible so any avid hip-hop fan should show some love to this OG album by copping a reissue LP.
Here are a couple things for you:
First, the amazing Can I Kick It? remix by J. Cole.
Second, A Tribe Called Quest live on Jimmy Fallon.
