Grime is slowly approaching the shores of the US and it is no surprise that major rappers are on the forefront of the genre coming over the pond. Last Friday night, Drake dropped a remix of Jamie xx's uber-boppable track I Know There's Gonna Be (Good Times) that features one of the most notorious grime artists in the game right now. Here is why you need to start listening to this beautiful genre:
- So what is grime you ask? Grime is dirty rap in the sense of production and sound (hence the name) and Drake has been into the genre for a long time, but it has been a UK favorite for a long time with a very little fan base in the states. There is a whole industry that is about to be broken wide open thanks to rappers like Drake bringing rappers like Skepta into the bigger picture.
- Skepta caught my attention about a year ago with his track "That's Not Me" featuring JME (another great rapper). He is very concentrated with his lyrics and he has a mean bite when ever he gets on the track. Skepta is veteran to the scene but you can ensure that his younger brother will come up with him when grime pops off in the US.
- Why is America such a deciding factor, though? Well just because we like to throw ridiculous amounts of money into new genres and fads. Look what happened to EDM within the last decade. Now, some may say this will tarnish the genre but I don't think grime will be that big. My hypothesis is that grime will come up as big as Odd Future and it will create a heavy cult following in the states which is well needed and deserved by the artists making the music.
